Stenciling a Bathoom

Vintage Stencil

Love the vintage look?

Stenciling is a fast, easy and inexpensive way to decorate a room in your home. To create the new vintage bath or shabby chic look, add these authentic c.1900 stencils, designed by Candace Wheeler (1827–1923), the renowned woman authority in her time on decorative textiles and interiors. Throughout the 1880s, as an influential woman designer in a field dominated by men, Wheeler and her firm created an extensive collection of textiles. In 1877, Wheeler founded the Society of Decorative Art in New York. In 1898, she designed the interior of the Woman’s Building at the Chicago World’s Columbian Exposition and arranged the State of New York’s applied arts exhibition at the event.

According to Wheeler, “One seldom tires of a good stenciled wall.”  The stencils above highlights Japanese Carp (known as koi in Japan) with shells and vines. Both of these stenciling borders of repeating designs were designed as friezes for a bathroom. Wheeler recommended that frieze borders of this kind start with strongly contrasting color at the top and then carry it downward through gradually fading tints until they are lost in the general color of the wall (of course this border stenciling design would be just as effective without shading). Wheeler declared that these stencils can be added with the most delicate effect although the finished wall would still be capable of withstanding the most energetic scrubbing.

You can print these stenciling designs to create your own stencils here  or a ready-made stencil with Japanese Carp is available for purchase at www.burrows.com.
