Several varieties of wrought iron fencing are featured here. These examples are from an early 19th century print. Decorative touches in bronze and, in part, gilt were introduced. Decorative iron fence designs were chiefly executed in iron, and the lighter parts were of strong copper wire. These particular examples of wrought iron fencing were suitable to the flower garden but not as fences against cattle, or to separate lawn from pasture or the pasture from the shrubberies.

For many years wrought-iron was used in the construction of fences, railings, balustrades, and gates. Wrought iron metal can be incorporated as part of a wood fence design or used purely for an all metal fence. Wrought iron fencing can enhance the theme of an outdoor area and create a visual link from one landscaping area to another.
