The old mansion is the largest standing octagonal house in America, making it the rarest of historic mansions..
Standing out from all historic mansions is the Longwood; this old mansion is the largest standing octagonal house in America. Cotton baron Haller Nutt hired craftsmen from the northern states to create a mansion called Longwood for him prior to the Civil War, but they almost literally "dropped everything" to flee at the start of the war. The completed house was to have had 32 rooms, 26 fireplaces, 115 doors, 96 columns, and a total of 30,000 square feet of living space, but only nine of the 32 rooms were finished. Today Longwood, located in Natchez, Mississippi, is the largest standing octagonal house in America.
